@Jo Clear – an easier way is to run a bit of horse fence tape around the base of the fence (isolated from earth) and connect a portable electric fence to it – they only touch it once. Much less work.
We laid old refrigerator and stove racks along the fence line. The grass grows up between the grids so you can mow, but the dog can’t dig through them. However, our dog HAS figured out how to undo a carabineer clasp on his tie-out.
A friend of mine’s tunneling escape artist drove him nuts. He finally tried tying a empty plastic quart jug on pup’s collar. Pup never did figure out he needed a bigger hole.

Invisible Fence works so very well. Our puppy learned how it worked within about 10 seconds. I love it.
