    I don’t fly anymore. My car gets really good gas mileage. I drive from Louisiana to Kansas and back twice a year, and it only takes 2 1/2 tanks of gas. Comes out to about $75 each way, and I can pack as much stuff as I want! Of course, I get a real kick out of the drive. Some people can’t stand to be in a car that long.

    …and then Irving realizes he accidentally clicked the spammer’s link, and will now be spending the rest of the day removing viruses and spyware from his computer…

    I’m not sure if Irving has ever had a realization…. he’s still married to Cathy.

    notinksanymore - I used to enjoy flying, but I’m starting to appreciate traveling by car more, now that our kids are old enough to help with the driving (and don’t get as restless sitting for hours). No security hassles, bathroom stops more often if needed, no getting up in the middle of the night to get to the airport in time, less time spent in the close proximity of people with colds and other illnesses, better meals - yep, driving is more enjoyable, especially with being able to use GPS to help with navigating.

    @ notinksanymore -

    you forgot to mention that you’re allowed to bring a bottle of water in your car - a simple pleasure the terrorists have denied the flying public… bummer…

    of course, where i live, you have to get good and lost to burn more than one tank of gas getting to anywhere in the country. on the other hand, for international travel we don’t have much choice other than flying…

    and i wish i could fill my tank for a mere $30 - more than double that here…

    zev.farkas - When I do fly, I bring a small (less than 3 oz.) bottle of ice. (Fill with water, place in freezer for several hours.) I put it in the plastic bag with the other liquids shortly before going through security, but rest of the time have a small collapsible insulated bag to keep it, along with some cheese snacks. I like having it along, just in case I need to take a pill, and don’t have opportunity to get something larger to drink. Also helps keep the cheese cool. Yep, one of the hassles inflicted on us due to the terrorists.

    @Rmom -

    Thanks - maybe I’ll try it. of course, each airline/airport/country has their own version of the rules…

    We love car trips, but about as close as we could ever get to Europe by car was the east coast of Nova Scotia.

    I HATE to fly now- last trip they lost AND damaged my luggage in both directions, but when traveling I use a “babybottle” insulated purse with other pockets for documents, and my 3oz bottles are packed with a mix of water and gin (like rmom I pack some cheese and a sliced apple) and I sometimes get some extra ice at the airport. I’d rather just stay here, but travel only if my kids and their families are meeting somewhere else.
