That guy doesn’t know how lucky he is. Mess with a cop’s family – much less his wife – and there’s an extra-huge pile of excrement that’s going to come down on you.

We don’t always give animals enough credit. As Bats said, Morty knows where the danger lies.

My dog is cute and fuzzy and everybody wants to pet her. But she thinks everyone is suspicious, and she barks and growls at them. and I like it that way. I feel a lot safer walking her in the dark knowing people are scared to approach.

When my Shepherd/ Lab mix was a puppy, she would bark at the shady characters that would sometimes pass our front yard. One day, I saw her run to her dog house, grab her favorite toy, then run back to the front of the yard. When I looked in front, she was playing with two police officers, who had stopped in front of our yard! She knew the good guys from the bad guys and was the best guardian of house, kids and cats, I ever had…God how much I miss that dog.

We do not know all the good they do. Not by threat but by alert.

I remember reading once about a couple that bought a small guard dog for their apartment. While they were out one day (shortly after getting the dog) the apartment was robbed and the dog was killed during the burglery. They started wondering what difference a small guard dog made since it was so easy for the robber to deal with the dog, but when they were taking the dog away to be buried it’s jaws opened and they found the piece of evidence that convicted the criminal, the dog bit off his thumb before he killed it, and his jaws were locked together so tight that he couldn’t pry them open to retreive his thumb afterward. After that the couple decided that a small guard dog did make sense.

First time, but not the last, that Mortimer’s actions will go unnoticed. (Except by us!)
