    Zipper and Achmedinejad both.

(I once saw a great commencement speech from V.P. Spiro Agnew. He spoke of how every graduating class is told they are the future of mankind, how they will save the world, yada yada, yet each generation doesn’t do any better than the previous. But everyone deserves their shot at it, so go out and see what you can do. Great dose of realism. Too bad he turned out to be a crook.)

My graduation speaker was Charles Kuralt - for those of you who can remember him - and it was interesting, funny and appropriate to the time (early 70’s). Couldn’t have asked for anyone better.

While back I went to 2 graduations one spring at 2 different colleges. As luck would have it, Marion Wright Edleman was the speaker at both… She gave the same speach.

I wonder how the WH schedules the President amongst so many invitations. We know that Annapolis/West Point are musts. I never see Colorado Springs mentioned. The rest? Somehow I bet Liberty U (in Virginia) didn’t invite President O this year either.

I surprised and republicans could make it, what with them having to pass the Student Union and all. :-)

    Two notable college commencement quotes:

Commencement speeches were invented largely in the belief that outgoing college students should never be released into the world until they have been properly sedated. ~ Garry Trudeau

More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly. ~ Woody Allen (given during his commencement address)

Zipper thinks he’s at a Republican rally. This repeat must originally go back at least two years; otherwise the speaker would be Palinbush (whose college career would have inspired him to keep awake).

Is it a sign of the times that I missed both my commencement “exercises” because I was already back working? (and I hated “crowds”)

The author James Michner gave the address at my university graduation. I have absolutely no memory of what he talked about.

My mom had John F. Kennedy scheduled for her class way back when, but of course he got shot before it could happen.

Westmorland spoke at my HS graduation (‘74), like Ginrummy33, that’s about all I remember.

Most of us can at least remember listening to speakers at our graduation. Zipper won’t remember anything; he’s too hung over. Getting drunk out of your senses the night before commencement has long been a rite of passage for graduating seniors at Ivy League schools.
