Norman: If you procrastinate long enough, you can get away with never taking down your Christmas lights!
I’d love to leave some lights up year-round. When the days get short, it’s nice to light up the perimeter of the front porch. And in the summer, when you’re inviting people over for a barbecue in the evening, they make the deck look much more festive than flood lights.
And my daughter really wants to put up Halloween lighting (orange and purple, ghosts and pumpkins and things) throughout October.
Sadly, my HOA won’t stand for that. Lights can’t go up before Thanksgiving, and must come down by January 1st.
shaminoWhat religion are they enforcing? In the Christian calendar, Christmas ends on January 6 with epiphany – depending on whether you are on the Julian or Gregorian (Orthodox) calendar. There are similar light-centered ceremonies in Hindu and Buddhist calendars, plus a few others within those bigots’ Thanksgiving to New Year boundaries. It is time to zap those who think their freedom of religion includes the power to deprive everyone else of theirs.
There is a house we pass daily that has all it’s decorations up, every year, all year. There is another house that has 2 small trees either side of the front door and another in an upstairs window that are lit differently all year depending on the season.
We put ours up around Thanksgiving or earlier pending the weather, but do not light until we come home from a trip the first weekend in Dec as we are uncomfortable letting them go on and off when we are away.
The last 2 years everything came down very late due to huge amount of snow and extremely cold weather. Our inside stuff we left up as we could not get to the garage to store it. We finally ended up boxing it and leaving the boxes in the living room both years. By the time they could go out it was June, so we just left them in the living room. Normally they would have been down and stored the middle of January.
Me and many of my neighbors don’t bother to take down at least some of the Christmas lightning, we just disconnect the power to them. It depends on how visible they are when the are not lighted.

I don’t put them up either. Keep it simple (relatively) Tree with decorations inside.

Go up the day after Thanksgiving (I don’t Black Friday). Down New Year’s Day. I have both days off so it works out for me.
