Thus the patriarchal assertion that humans are superior to animals and have separate souls that distinguish them as such in their refusal to serve in the natural order. To see women acting as men and find it to be unnatural is not unusual then, as the actions of men may be seen as unnatural, though not unexpected, on their own.

    Dear Ms. Teresa

    M. Briffault is my favorite man of anthropological letters.

It is as if you have a “window” into our collective psyche (or are you giving us a window into yours?).

    Sincerely,

    Rotifer’s Mother

P.S. On a gonadosomatic index* scale of guppy to leviathan, this strip rates a solid Nurse Shark.

    * Still not a valid Scrabble word.

R.S. Briffault is said to have debated one of my favorite anthropologists, Bronislaw Malinowski (on marriage), and appears to be in the general line of J.J. Bachofen’s Das Mutterrecht of the earlier 19th century. But his generalization, commonly stated as a “Law,” is more effective descriptively than normatively. If it works for you, that’s good. If it doesn’t, that’s okay. Reifying it, however, changes nothing “out there” in the world of animal and human interactions. It is a construct for thought.

    Guffault’s Law:

“Most women seem to have a good sense of humor, since the only benefit accruing to them from their association with men is occasional comedic relief.”

If you examine any overly aggressive men in your history, you will find that they have mother issues, and are usually striking out against an invisible all-encompassing female presence that cannot be identified. I’m calling it the Stewie Griffon Syndrome, or SGS for short.Seth MacFarlane is known for complex characterizations that seem simple and stupid at first glance, but illuminate depths of the human psyche that normally go unexamined. This examination of the character in relation to the societal role of the female constitutes fair use of the image, for anybody who is concerned.I highly recommend watching Family Guy and purchase of DVDs or streaming downloads of the show.(Just in case any overly aggressive martinets are perusing with an eye to calling out the least possible infraction.)
