Half Price Books in Dallas-Fort Worth sells “Books by the Yard”. It’s usually Readers Digest Condensed Books. Along with books that one wonders how on they ever got published.
I was in the Collectibles section and a lady was filling her cart with nice older books, multiple volume sets, etc. I commented on something she had in her cart. She told me she loved old books. Ahh..methinks a kindred soul. Further conversation revealed that she was an interior decorator and used the books to add to the decor. She didn’t actually read them, they were just visuals. I dunno, somehow this just seems wrong.
There was actually a company some years back that would buy up old hardbound books, cut then so there was only an inch or so left from the spine, glue them together and sell them complete with a hanging bookshelf that looked built in from a few feet away. Pretty disgusting!

That’s how pubs buy books for their shelves.

In 1971 one of my college professors told this story from when he had worked in a bookstore while he was in school.
