    I think we have King James’ translators (or mistranslators) to blame for that. It’s amazing how many people think early seventeenth century English is the only appropriate language for the Bible.

    For the record (and I am sure you all know this) smite, smote, smitten.

    By this measure it should be bite, bote, bitten. Or better still might, mote, mitten. Talk about your irregular verbs!

    Smitten seems to be the only form still in use, for “in love,” & even that’s gone a bit archaic.
