Religion is merely a cross-border version of nationalism and tribalism, us vs. them. Some are more restrained, but most, especially if they call on the Old Testament, are authoritarian, violent, and deadly, from Joshua, to the Inquistiion, to ISIL, same old story from the “radical” side.
By the by, I have to disagree with you. Religon is like reason or psychology or political ideology. A tool people use to justify their behaviour. Human desire for power is the catalyst for our actions IMO. As to those countries you name….they aren’t socities without religon. They may have secular style governments but that’s not the same thing. And yes, those countries do have crime and ignorance and many of the other evils mankind brings on itself.
