If I were that legless lizard, I’d be annoyed, too, at being called a “snake”!

I don’t think I’d hang around to check for blinking.

Snakes evolved from lizards, legless lizards are the transitional species that shows that link (like how the nautilus shows how squids are related to shelled mollusks like snails)

Most obvious difference, lizards have an external ear opening, snakes don’t.

“legless lizards are the transitional species that shows that link ".

More likely a separate branch, sharing a common ancestor.

In other words, all lizards, legged or not, have eyelids. I knew that snakes and fish didn’t.

Why have legless lizards when you already have snakes?

Ag8O’SulMada: Actually, snakes do have eyelids, transparent and permanently shut. This shows up when shedding their skin, with a couple days of blindness as the skin on the head separates first, and then the rest peels back in a smooth, quick motion, usually taking less than a minute. Lizards shed their skin in patches, humans do it as dandruff (and sunburn recovery).

Wabbit: Redundant systems are for the event that if something happens to one, there is a less susceptible backup to keep the whole thing functioning.
