In cities, the elderly cannot ride bicycles for most part. It would behoove Ms. Sorenson to be a little more compassionate toward this segment of the population. They either need to ride in buses or private vehicles.
I live in the People’s Republic of Boulder, Colorado, and love it. Yeah the goofy progressives can be silly sometimes, but they are far more positive than the goofy right wing. Boulder has been taxing its citzens for decades to buy open space, and now the county is something like 75% open space. And it is SPECTACULAR open space! We also have over 200 miles of non-car bike paths in Boulder. We have bike lanes (real bike lanes!) alongside almost every road. Now the cars are still really dangerous, but almost everyone rides, so, despite the danger, since there are far more cyclists than anywhere except maybe Amsterdam, the cars tend to be way more aware. This is a really good example of positive government. We all pay the tax, we all have access, we all love the fact that we live in such protected and accessible natural beauty. Lucky, lucky, lucky.
I guess nobody here has heard of Portland, OR.… it rains almost as much as Seattle, yet everyone bikes. There are even bicycle operated moving companies. ( Saw it on Portlandia on the IFC network, a very funny show).
When bicyclists start paying for the services they require, I’ll think about having some respect for them. As it is, they suck off funding raised for infrastructure repair while the roads go unpatched and our bridges are crumbling. Specially marked bike lanes and paths don’t just appear by magic… they have to be paid for by someone. That someone is the motoring public who are being taxed for declining services. Obeying existing laws will also help. Stop means STOP for everyone! Red lights mean the same! Ignoring those laws and darting willy-nilly through traffic isn’t the way to gain supporters. If you (as a bicyclist) want respect you need to earn it! And, don’t blame the driver of the SUV if you get stuck in his grill because of YOUR stupidity! Ride smart or get off the roadways
Considering that road wear is exponentially proportional to vehicle weight, we are far from being fair in road use taxes. But, some feel that only other people should have to pay taxes.
Let the cyclists get licensed and pay vehicle registration taxes, then they can have a say what we do on our roads. And make them buy insurance so people like me don’t end up with a $20,000 medical bill when one of them cuts in front of you and causes you to wreck to avoid killing them.

It would be responsible, rational and effective. Naaaw, no one would go for that!

In Harris County Texas there are NO sidewalks much less bike lanes (or shoulders). You ride a bike, you take your life in your hands.

Ah, the “Glacier”. Like the Sequoia, another huge vehicle named for the thing it’s designed to destroy.

GM’s “Yukon Denali” – of course Denali is not in the Yukon, but you do need about that much space to park one.

And some way to protect the pedestrians from the bikers.
