This is also called a selectively permeable membrane.The idea is to allow equalization of one element, but not others. Unfortunately, all the really good stuff is very large, so you have to allow equalization of misery also.Mostly, we only open the membrane pores enough to allow transfer of misery, and then become incensed and don’t dilate them enough to also allow transfer of happiness.A good hate filter would keep out the misery and allow transfer of happiness only. But that’s not how the world works.It is the little things that make up happiness, but even littler things that make up misery.

Nature abhors a vacuum, especially the ones with the beater bar that always gets all wrapped up in animal hair and stray fibers and then heats up and stinks. Those are the worst.
