Sydney Phillips said yesterdayAs you’d ‘opined’ last week . . .“Ultimately, though, the gold is not as important as finding the mastermind (?) behind the theft”.The Owners of the Gold, might NOT agree ?

Maybe I worded that poorly. What I meant was that finding Jimmy is more urgent, i.e. more important at the moment. As we can see in today’s strip, Jimmy seems to be on a killing spree and even though Tracy may not have known about that until the current police call, he has to be stopped as soon as possible.

Before you even ask, yes, I did notice that Sam uses the word “luck,” nut I still think it’s legitimate police work. Maybe the chase will begin in earnest now.

The problem is that I’m pretty sure that Blaze has a police scanner, too, so she may be monitoring that call. As for Sam’s theory about the Blackhearts’ resources, Jimmy was offered access to their resources (at least to their specialists) but did not appear to take up that offer.

This gunfire, presumably the shooting that we saw about to take place yesterday, was not at the Dugard St. betting parlour that BB-Eyes spoke of and where Axelrod is in charge.

Jimmy can’t help it; he likes to win! Poor thing, he never liked to share anything (toys, gold, money, fried chicken, etc)

Tracy back at LAST ! But Bewildered ? Can;t see a clear Way forward ?But, recall that - ‘wise’, old adage Follow the MONEY . . .You can Hang your Hat on it !

All the indicators (via the Mole) were that, the Gold went in the direction of Lake PratchettIn fact, the ONLY ‘workable’ information Tracy’s had on the Gold Heist in all these past 3 weeksEven Mugg tried, (ostensibly to find survivors), there with verve, style and Slim Jim, but tail down, he wasn’t seen to find one, nor get a Scent of a Cent, far less Gold

Monday last, one ‘half expected’ Ted Tellum to ‘spot’ our Detective from his veranda, (as he surveyed the Rig and the Lake area below), say of Tracy arriving, had he driven directly there to keep abreast of fresh developments, BUT we can ‘see now’, , our hero never went . . . . . . like Mugg he dropped the scent?

Sort of blows your Mind - that Tracy ‘ignored’ the time worn adage and ‘dismissed’ Mole’s pointing finger on where to find the GoldPriority should’ve been to ‘recover’ the Gold, ahead of trying to apprehend the thief, who’s IDENTITY he doesn’t know, anyway !A little bit here, of putting the Cart before the Horse ?Today -confused ! ? Going ‘no where’ in particular (?) Driving around with Sam (in circles?). Apparently, waiting for ‘something to happen’ ?And fortuitously, Mike stepped IN (saved the day) by providing coincidental CLUES. Like one and one makes two – - that lead to the Blackhearts and Choo !

“Ye Gods”! Love these little bursts of - EUREKA !

(Perhaps, they figured readers had “Too Much” ? . Three weeks of tiresome plodding looking for Clues ? So why add another week, of the ‘same thing’ by the Lake ?Darn the need for Quick Pacing. Better then, to “pull the trigger” - and get some action ROLLING ! ?)

I will agree that there was some unexciting exposition about the earlier train robbery, but nothing like three weeks of it. Plodding? I’m not sure we’re reading the same strip. You mean anything that’s not a constant hail of gunfire?

“And so it goes…” Y’know… if Tracy had “heard that place has ties to the Blackhearts” then why wasn’t SOMEONE keeping an eye on it? they OBVIOUSLY need “concrete proof” of the Blackhearts’ dirty dealings… keeping a close eye on the place would be beneficial… no?

Gleeb, I was wondering the same thing myself when I first read it. Then I thought maybe that’s the only building on the block.

The entire 500 block of 2nd street has mob ties?

Well, the gunfire reports are coming from somewhere in the block, though Sam does mention “that place” as having mod ties. I don’t think it is meant to imply to whole block, just something on the block.

One of Chester Gould’s early Assistants on Dick Tracy was Dick Moores (1932 to 1936).He would later go on to create his own strip Jim Hardy (1936) The he worked subsequently, with Walt Disney.

There were two “anecdotes” he told of his time with Gould, in a Interview (“Dick Tracy and American Culture” / Garyn G. Roberts)These may(?) provide some “perspective” to the just completed Train robbery sequence we had here ?Not that I’m “knocking” the latter, just ‘noting the ’frailties’ of pacing by having events seemingly, stand at “Attention!”, for 3 weeks -April 12th, toMay 2nd Wherein, beyond an examination of the crime scene, little progression occurred,Incidental ‘side lights’ - yes, e.g, gangs from the past . . .. . . the reading of relevant Train Robbery books . . . . . . An exposition of theories on how the crime was committedBut in that time, little REAL substance or visible forward enterprise . . . until the Mole arrived in May

While today, a contrived “kick start’s” needed, to get Tracy focused and moving (at well into week 4)Some might think, bringing an ‘Empty Handed’ experience as he moves forward. and then, in an opposite direction to the location of the stolen Gold and possible fresher clues ?

But let me pause - to SAY . . . the above is Not an “Attack” on the current team. Frankly, they are the ‘BEST THING’ that’s happened to the Dick Tracy strip, since Chet Gould retired . . .

But if, the Train isn’t running ‘On Time’, someone should Blow a Whistle ! ? The Conductor ought to know !There IS perfect . . .And then, there’s less than - perfect !

    -

    Now to Dick Moores :

    1) -"When I came to work for Chester there was A stack of Letters 2 or 3 feet high on top of hisFile cabinet from PTAs, etc about violence in the Strip.*Capt. Patterson told him to ignore them, soChester did, I think up to his dying day."*

    2) – “I went to school with Jack Ryan, I met him on the street one day and he had just seen the First *”X – Nine" drawn by Alex Raymond. He felt I would be out of a job in a month or soBecause “X Nine” was so much better than “Tracy”We younger artists just out of art school had a tendencyof thinking of Gould’s work as crude and drawn with a Screw-Driver,But it didn’t take long for me to realize that the man was a Genius. He had the ability to get the drawing and writingOff the paper and Into the readers Mind,In my opinion he was the outstanding cartoonist of our time.It was a thrill and a blessing to have worked with him in his Formative years.I still feel at times he is looking over my shoulder"*

Perhaps it’s ‘entirely’ my FAULT . . .I have ‘several’ of them. But I’ve never ‘picked up’ an X – Nine or a Rip Kirby story-line and ever “finished reading it” !Excellent ART for sure. But liked Buck Rogers ahead of Flash Gordon. After Tracy, Andriola’s Kerry Drake before the above

    A lot of words to say my 10 cents ! ;- )

I would concur with Neil Wick’s comment of Blaze (or any of the Blackhearts) possibly monitoring a police scanner, especially after Jimmy’s first “clean-out.”

Convergence of Blackhearts and Tracy…when? By Sunday, perhaps?

    WOO GOSH!

(sorry, I’ve gotten to like Blowtop’s phrase)

I really hate to nitpick, but if Tracy walked the tunnel, he would have seen the same thing that Ted just saw, a drilling rig with no drill stem anywhere around. Since Tracy obviously got all his life experiences from inside the El, he doesn’t suspect anything. Tracy must have a “Friend of Gruber” bumper sticker on the back of his car.
