The oldest rule in politics: Follow the money.

Ronald Reagan elimnated the fairness doctrine.

No fairness doctrine + big time bucks = Right Wing Radio.

It’s called National Public Radio, dude.

On a more serious note, Air America was doomed more by a completely incompetent business model than anything it said. (I know of a radio station that wanted to add 1-2 of its shows to its line-up to “balance” its right-wing shows, and they claimed Air America demanded “100% share of mind”—nothing but their shows. Not even the right-wing shows/networks made those demands.)

The reason is pretty simple, free market economics. All radio stations want is something that people will listen to, and more importantly, advertisers will pay to sponsor. For whatever reason, those right-wing talk shows are very profitable, and apparently the left wing ones aren’t, so you get tons of right wing ones. My theory is that the left wingers like their TV, so they don’t listen to radio, while right wingers feel disenfranchised with TV, and end up listening to the radio. One thing is certain, though. Left wingers, moderates, and right wingers all have places to go where they feel comfortable.

…and, if he loses enough sponsors, he’ll be off the air. That’s the way the market works. It’s not a conspiracy to put only right wing on the radio, and only left wing somewhere else. I’m no fan of of Limbaugh, but I’m even less a fan of censorship. Let the market work…
