Dad: "...There'd be a coffee bar, deli, theater, live music... maybe I'd even pick up my guitar again!" Mom: "This is truly ambitious and exciting, honey. But - what about funding?" Dad: "Right. I figure $60,000 minimum" Mom: "I don't think we'd qualify for a loan..." Dad: "No. Oh, well. Dumb idea" Mom: "Hold on. Do we know a crazy person with an extra $60,000?"

He probably hasn’t been to “River City”, but it’s T.J. with a capital T, and that rhymes with P…which stands for Phat settlement…and for “Please watch your step”….-A cliffhanger and segue if I ever saw one…..

Are we referring to T.J., Mrs. DeGroot? Hope he’s willing to give his insurance claim for a good cause.

Nancy is breaking the 4th wall by looking outside the frame. She is inviting us to remember TJ’s $60,000 insurance claim for his exploded food truck.
Angelalex242 about 9 years ago
Doubt TJ would go for it.

“Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money”, the Pet Shop Boys " (♫), as seen…. here.

Some places have one person with the plans and the “keys” to getting things done, and someone with the cash to pay for it, and someone who knows the right people. So it’s sometimes a case of “mix and match”. A lot of “weird” partnerships have come up this way… – But Nancy did ask: “Do we know a *_”crazy"_* person with an extra 60K?"……
wiselad about 9 years ago
as an accountant and the “broad plan”, he can get around to get place up to fire codes and handle the financial things and TJ can just handle the cafe and the deli, if I was TJ I would try to make it 60-40 in his favor as he is one with cook skills and the money needed to start
Caldonia about 9 years ago
Well isn’t that convenient! And I would have thought TJ, having had his money since at least Halloween, would have spent some of it at least. But no, instead we’ll get the wacky hijinks of a middle aged guy and a young guy arguing about what would make the best hangout but Frank’s ideas will be too “square”.
wlabinger about 9 years ago
Brilliant idea, Frank! Finally, you’ve chased your boring out!
Caldonia about 9 years ago
And somehow, they keep finding new ways to make no sense. It’s a strange talent…
tahoeh2o about 9 years ago
Of course TJ…
Editman about 9 years ago
I assume the Degroot’s own their home, they can get a mortgage with these low interest rates. But then why is it a successful business man doesn’t have that much money saved up?

TJ was rich before the settlement

I bet Knute would do it for no pay; he seemed to really enjoy scrubbing toilets as a hobby! :=)

If they knew Matthew Lesko (the “Government Grants” guy with the “?”s all on his suit), he’d probably show them a way to raise the funds. As soon as they bought one of his books…with endless lists… “you scratch his back, and he’ll show you how to scratch yours”….
rickray777 about 9 years ago
No. It IS a possibility (IF, say, they ever win the Lottery!); but PROBABLY NOT.
Sisyphos about 9 years ago
Who would have thought that it would be Nancy who would implicitly suggest TJ as a backer/producer for this showbiz extravaganza? While I wish Frank and Nancy well, I do not see this turning out to be a profitable investment in the long run….
Pointspread about 9 years ago
That’s a good point, using that house as collateral, if they have enough equity, should help get a loan.
Barry1941 about 9 years ago
This strip must be in an alternate universe. 60K would hardly be a drop in the bucket for such an ambitious project. And those two must be sort of poor not to be able to borrow that much. No equity in their house?

I very much feel that Mrs D was breaking the 4th wall in that last panel.

You SAID It, Frank, THIS Is a Dumb Idea and Furthermore…,WAIT! Did You Say “COFFEE Bar???”
wiselad about 9 years ago
TJ might have gone to jail, but there was a chance of the insurance saying “no payment for strong hints of accident caused by Negligence of TJ, but no court as there was no enough proof to get premeditated guilt, beyond a reasonable doubt”
Carl Premium Member about 9 years ago
$60,K probably wouldn’t get them through the permit process.
The Old Wolf about 9 years ago
Holy hqiz, is the Mrs. going to buy into this idea? On the gripping hand, if the thing goes down in flames (like TJ’s last idea did, literally) then Frank only has to remind her that it was her idea to involve TJ.
Terrywoebegone about 9 years ago
It better be a success. Blowing it up would be a bit more obvious than a weenie truck.
Sportymonk about 9 years ago
Bad idea. If TJ fronts the money then he owns it and thus he can and will make changes and thus Mr. DeGroot’s idea disappears right in front of him.
kaystari Premium Member about 9 years ago
You know That’s right! But what better way to start a new story line then by involving TJ!
dre7861 about 9 years ago
Nancy, don’t go there. You will regret it. I would rather go into business with a bag of angry snakes than with TJ!
TORAD_07 about 9 years ago
They also own the rental house TJ and Brad live in. I’m pretty sure they could qualify for some type of a loan or sell the rental house to raise funds.
If they do sell it, they should sell it to Brad. Otherwise, Brad will either have to move into Toni’s apartment, or they’ll have to find another place. I don’t know if Brad & Toni can afford to buy it, at present, but…. And, if they want to adopt Shannon, it will go much better for them (I’d guess) if they’re in a good, roomy house, rather than a tiny apartment.
So, I guess the warehouse is how they expect TJ to continue in the strip, post a Brad/Toni wedding. I gather they’ll have some living quarters for TJ ‘on site."
We’ll have to see.
JD_Rhoades about 9 years ago
Every newbie who goes into the restaurant/bar/club business vastly underestimates the cost. 60K? Pshaw.
thefloyd about 9 years ago
With TJ handling the food, I’d invest heavily in this project!

This is the 21st century, Evans. This is hardly start up.
del_grande Premium Member about 9 years ago
And don’t forget what happened the last time TJ got involved with a business partnership – where, somehow, the ONLY person outside of the people involved who ever found out that it was a scam was the guy in charge of the Miss Junior Chamber of Commerce pageant
cdemattos about 9 years ago
Just think how much TJ can make after he burns the warehouse to a crisp!
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
This is the least realistic story ($60K to rent the warehouse, bring it up to code, and turn it into a club????) we’ve seen in a long time, and that’s really saying something, given Gunther’s “life changing” week on the Sun City bus tour of Peru.
YatInExile about 9 years ago
Can you say “second mortgage”? I knew you could.
ironman01 about 9 years ago
If Frank says $60,000 it will probably take $120,000. One of the biggest problems in small businesses is under capitalization. So T J better look closely at the numbers.
sinjin321 about 9 years ago
Awesome storyline…I think it’s great that Mr. DeGroot is showing some ambition and creativity.

Surprise! Nancy turns out to be the Sucker.*Mom, let’s remember you are financing most of your daughter’s college education. *On the other hand, your and Dad’s prudence, planning, and guidance may be exactly what TJ needs to get his life turned around.
Sheila Hardie about 9 years ago
Why yes. Yes, you do. Enter TJ
thebigboot about 9 years ago
So they’re going to trust the man who instead of working towards something productive spent how long working a job in order to screw someone over because she messed with his friend?
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
So what will Frank’s place be called? The DeGroot Cellar? The Pitt Stop? The Warehouse That Violates All Rules Of Economics?
milady1 about 9 years ago
Cue T.J.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Or the main establishment of this project (the theater being located near the local lake) can be called: “Smoke On The Water”. Then the concession area (either the deli or coffee bar, located in the upper level) can be called: “Fire In The Sky”…. and thereby will be consistent with the “Firefighter” theme many wanted, and also definitely consistent with TJ’s mode of doing business (with people, their homes and with mobile trucks)…
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Sounds nice, but they can’t possibly afford to do any of that….^Perhaps you’ve never ordered anything from the Acme Co. catalog….
Jim Kerner about 9 years ago
Please., Nancy and Frank. Don’t do something stupid like hooking up with TJ!
