Compliment her honestly, and let her take it any way she wants to. That’s the best you can do, and that’s all you should do as her mother.
Living with Irving and the leeches, she doesn’t need more criticism, she needs a free refill on her Prozac and a bottle of wine.

I once heard someone suggest that everything we say should be able to pass four tests: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it helpful? Is it kind? If all four are “yes”, say it, and how your listeners receive it is up to them; otherwise, hold your peace.

Oh, let her take it the “wrong way”. As long as you mean them in the right way, everyone needs some compliments. For example, there shouldn’t be a “but…” at the end of any compliment.

SCAATY_423, I should send that to my mother-in-law. Not for me though, she’s always saying something to offend my husband. I try to tell him she’s probably just trying to be helpful, but nonetheless he still gets mad. :/

Vaour Woman, I DID SAY HONESTLY compliment, so… there is nothing ill begotten there.
If you’re quick to make friends with people who criticize you (your first comment), all you’re going to get is criticized, and it will just get worse from there. So if you like to be abused, that’s up to you. You may like For Better or For Worse better than Cathy in that case.
By the way, nobody likes French, or France. Wanna be friends? I bet not. It’s funny that you just signed up an hour ago and picked me right out.
Since half your name is in English, and you obviously speak it, since the site is in English, as are all the comments, why are you hiding behind French, of all nasty things?
