Actually no. Deering isn’t being the least bit immature. Ted Lind said it best. If parents want to play the lottery with their kids health…well. I can’t even condone that. This issue effects the public health. And not getting the vaccine because of a single, discredited study ( http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2015/02/03/vaccines-the-best-way-to-persuade-parents-is-the-worst-for-kids/ ) isn’t being responsible at all.

Other than the fact that 99%+ of the anti-vaccination folks are fundamentalist. conservative, evangelical Christian types, with the rare case of someone who’s looking for rationale for why their child is genetically damaged like McCarthy, where are the “liberals” fighting science, medical advances, and facts?

“That being said, if it can be proven that they are the cause of another being infected then they are to be held liable (criminal and civil) for the damages up to and including manslaughter. After all, one should not forget that with every right comes responsibility.”.Should it be the same for someone with an STD? (side note I agree with both your points).

Other than a few imunosuppresed folks, and under age babies, vaccines ARE safer than the diseases, or even rare “side effects”. Religious beliefs are the reason folks are allowed to skip their kids before schools admit them-99.99% of the cases. Medical challenges are almost as rare as hen’s teeth.

True freedom includes the right to be ignorant and to do stupid things, hopefully not taking other innocents along with us. However when the latter does start happening do we suppress personal freedoms for the good of the majority, or do we continue to let freedom ring…at any cost?

No, that’s why we have countless government agencies whose job it is to protect the majority from the larcenous or uncaring ‘freedom’ of the ignorant or unprincipled. We all have freedoms, but they’re limited by other people’s rights to freedom, too. The majority has the right to demand protection from the minority who would deprive them of their rights. Typhoid Mary placed in permanent quarantine because she wouldn’t stop getting jobs preparing food. She was a carrier with a natural immunity to the disease and refused to believe she was the cause of so many getting ill and dying. To protect others, her freedom was curtailed.
