Mr. Obama has failed to take the example of Jefferson, Lincoln, and other Presidents who constantly invited opponents to the White House for dinner and drinks in order to discuss legislation. He has also placed more trust in his inner circle and close friends and failed to go outside of that comfort zone to seek advice and support except through speeches. I am disappointed. However…If the GOP sent a Civilty in politics bill to Mr. Obama, it was probably filled with additional items such as the Keystone Pipeline, greater restrictions on the right to choose, more tax breaks for the wealthy, the ability to donate more money to candidates, et al. In the end, with both parties acting as an oligarchy at odds with itself, there is only one true answer. We must give Presidents the Line Item Veto. It is the ONLY way Americans can see which party is acting on their behalf instead of on the behalf of special interests and political patrons. Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that said, “The Buck Stops Here”. The Line Item Veto would make that statement a fact and would put an end to legislation installed into bills anonymously, or added without debate and the President would take full responsibility… credit OR blame… for the laws that went into effect in our nation. Then Americans would really know for whom they should be voting. Respectfully,C.

GOP met on inauguration night 2009 to discuss how to block anything that the new President wanted to accomplish. Frank Luntz, strategist for Bush 43 verified this. The day after the 2010 election, McConnell stated that the number 1 priority for the GOP was to limit Obama to one term. This was after they LIED during the campaign by stating that their number 1 priority was JOBS.

Hey no Republican yelled “YOU LIE!” during the State of the Union speech.

What could be a more dramatic demonstration of how civil the Republicans have become?

While some kicks are called for, some to the heads of Congrespersons who don’t have theirs screwed on straight, might not do much good.

The big advantage to the line item veto is it allows a President to send back to Congress their most egregious proposals, which ARE “line items” lke riders and “earmarks”, which would allow him to conduct appropriately the nation’s business and keep things moving, while call out, and getting rid of idiocies: in one example; Coburn’s rider to force the NPS to change decades of a viable “no loaded weapons in the parks” regulation, with LEGISLATION written by the NRA, that has already led to tragedies that didn’t happen before. A moron with a loaded peashooter shootinb a bear, because he had the weapon, and geting eaten by that wounded and pissed off now bear, is only one example. People shootings have also increased dramatically.

When it comes to other agencies and law vs regulation, the Republicans have gone totally nuts in the last six years, and the line item would make NO BILL a “must pass” with all the garbage they’e inserted. Yes, it could also work the way round if either party couldn’t muster the override of a valid veto.

Thanks for the links. I didn’t know any of that. In regards to one of those links:.“And whether you like this president or not, the office represents far more than the individual who currently sits at the desk. Once the American people elect a president, he or she is the president of all Americans, including Mitch McConnell and John Boehner. When your leader asks for your participation, you don’t say no unless you’ve got something far bigger than simply being too busy.”.In a book I read about Truman, there was an occasion when Truman flew out to Japan to meet General MacArthur, to discuss the Korean situation, and MacArthur showed up very late. Harry steamed, and said. “He can keep Harry Truman waiting all he may wish, but he damn well cannot keep his Commander-in-Chief waiting!”

And another historical footnote for SizeofPea and Respectful Troll:.During the Civil War, General McClellan a young know-it-all who showed no respect to the President, snubbed his Commander-in-Chief, much to his later regret.Lincoln, with Sec of State Seward, stopped by the General’s house to speak with him about an important matter. Little Mac was not home, but his servant invited them in to wait, as he was expected shortly. McClellan arrived home. His servant took his coat and advised him about the two callers, in the parlor. The general, instead, went upstairs, and after a while, told his servant that he was retiring and would see no one. The servant nervously gave this message to the two most powerful men in the country. Seward, fumed, and demanded that the servant go upstairs and drag his master out of bed, but Lincoln said no, and they left. Shrewd Abe KNEW that word of this insolence would spread. It did, like fire, throughout DC and beyond. This was too much, absolute insubordination, and the egotistical general lost much support, even from his own following, that when Lincoln finally sacked him, there was really no complaint.

Does anyone remember Obama saying he was going to do Executive Orders on Immigration BEFORE the newly elected Republicans would be sworn in to office. Civility got kicked in the face by the Oval Office.

The only petulance & name calling has come from the White House & obama’s campaign speeches. It’s is hilarious how liberals seem to think that civility & compromise is a one way street. Oh and how many House bills did Harry Reid refuse to allow to be put up for a vote?? Oh yea that’s right since they were Republican bills, it your mind they don’t count.
