In many cultures a person’s “Real” name wasn’t known to anyone but their parents and themselves so that Magicians couldn’t curse them. To know someone’s “REAL” name gave control over them, even a God!

(Often thought that’s why ‘You-know-who’ to Moses that his name was “I Am.”)

We had a Binky in my class who was as astonished as the rest of us to find out his real name in 5th grade.

In arab cultures, a man is called by his name until he has a son. From then on, he is called “father of ….” (abu…). In this way, a kid brings shame or glory on his father and by extension, his whole family, according to his deeds. I found this out when a coworker kept calling me Abu Frank. That made sense to him.

For years I was affectionately called Buzz! I didn’t care for it very much; but considering the source, I just went along with the gag..More than 15 years ago, the friend who first used “Buzz” when referring to me, passed away… way too early in life as a result of a brain tumor..Nobody has called me Buzz since…

Only two people are left who called me by my middle name which is the way my family called me. Only one calls me by my first name, which was how I was addressed at work. My husband gave me the nickname “Linda” 52 years ago and that has stuck. I was hospitalized recently and an acquaintance was told that there was no Linda K. in the hospital. Boy, was my husband racked over the coals . . .they wonder what he did with my body!!! Tee Hee!

When I visited The Wall in Washington DC there was a man crying because he couldn’t find his best friend. He had never learned his full name. We eventually found it by uuing the death date.
