Besides – is Rita a South American, North American or just plain stupid?? She is of course pretend from the United States.

As far as I’m concerned, if you were born in the United States of America, or became a naturalized citizen, you are an American. This hyphenated ethnicity is only dividing this country and setting one against the other.
The problem is, the whole universal ‘citizen of the world’ concept tends to be a modern one. It comes of our being able to travel the world fairly rapidly, and communicate all over the globe instantaneously. But many of our regressive habits and thought patterns have been passed down through the generations- from times when none of that was true- or even possible. **********************Centuries ago, people were more acutely separated by physical distance, and getting word to or from another part of the planet was a slow business. So, in an ironic sense, the concept of ‘one planet one people’ has its own tendency toward myopic vision: when we forget that people have not always lived as we do today

Good thing this is fictional or Rita would/could be a memory. “A) We don’t use that word in this office” could, in some parts of the planet get you real dead. Personally, I find her attitude deeply insulting even tho I can’t say I’m the most devout Christian around.

When traveling in the UK I would occasionally be asked what part of America I was from. The only answer I could think of that made sense was “north”.
