    What is a Blue Moon?

There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days).

The Other Kind of Blue Moon

The older definition, which is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, states that the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons.

So the next time they will do a good deed is July 31, 2015.

This probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, but it’s close enough for gummint work: One evening many years ago I was driving to choir practice during sunset, when I noticed that every green light on Fifth Avenue North was blue. It wasn’t greenish blue, or anything like that, but the bluest blue you could ever imagine. I wondered why the City of St. Petersburg had changed all the green lights to blue, without notification, just like that. I can’t remember whether anyone else at choir had seen it. After that instance, I never saw the blue lights again, and have never seen anything else like it. So I guess that “Once in the blue lights” is the rarest time of all.

Yay for the reformed bullies. As I always think, let’s enjoy it while we can!

More to the point, a blue moon is a rare event or occurrence. Those three being heroes should qualify. The prop moon turning blue signifies this fact.

Gokie5: In the late ’40s, there was a campaign to use blue traffic signals for those with red/green color blindness. I think they decided position (red at top or left) would do as well and was cheaper. Blue has poorer visibility in a fog than green.

I thought nothing could beat the ridiculousness of the Klondike Ike story lines. I was WRONG. Everyone has their bad days. Just don’t make it a habit Mr. Armstrong.
