Red and Rover by Brian Basset for January 02, 2015
Transcript:
Mommmmm, is it okay if I take my new bike out for a spin?! The road out front has been all cleared! Oh, all right. But be careful, and please wear a helmet. There could still be patches of ice that are hard to see. Rover, I'm gonna hang back a bit while you, um, run ahead of me.

Notice his helmet is a football helmet…his Mom just wants him to stay safe…even if it was SC who brought it on CMAS Eve… =-O

Doesn’t Rover have a helmet, too?

Sneaky Red, sending Rover ahead to check for ice patches. Oh and by the way bike helmets came out in the 70s and this strip is set in the 60s, just saying.

Sure hope they don’t have much traffic on their road! At any rate, dogs should be playing in the yard, not on the road!!!

I am flabbergasted (there’s a word you don’t hear too often) I and all my friends and our now middle aged kids managed to make it to this age WITHOUT a bicycle helmet!.Simply flabbergasted…

I think the point is that Mom wouldn’t even have thought of suggesting a helmet in the 60’s. My mother was big on careful but I think the thought was that, if you need a helmet on a kid’s bike, you shouldn’t be riding. I know…we were a reckless generation of near-sociopaths.

Well, wearing a helmet on a bicycle was unheard of then but Mom is smart and worried about safety! There, we can spin things any way we wish! Lol

Dogday88: “If you ever had you flabber gasted, you know how painful that can be.” Steve Allen stock joke format. If Garson Kanin can bring back “couth” from the 17th century, a not quite extinct current word is no problem.
