Survival of the fittest in those days. Kids were expected to skin knees, fall off bikes and out of trees, get hurt occasionally—in our parents’ worldview, it’s how you learned to be careful.

I got a ticket for riding a gut on my handlebars. Cop was a neighbor. He had a couple of good looking daughters so he couldn’t have been all bad.
