It goes back to the intra-tribal rivalry of Abraham’s making, but actually, is just “human nature”, to distrust, or hate, anyone,or any THING (like bears, lions, coyotes) that represents “them vs us”.
Churchie: it wasn’t distrust, humans don’t like predators because the eat the same food WE want, and they were here before us. The same is at work with those who claim others are preying on society, but when they prosper because of that society themselves, they are the ones who truly feel themselves “owed”.
Cora: please, get informed on at least one subject, any subject, but regarding slavery, you haven’t a clue about the real world, either abroad, or right here at home with elements of the sex trade, and the “employement” of foreign workers brought in, by profiteers.
An excellent post. Thanks for your contribution. As a sort-of-a-socialist, I would propose that people are not just individuals. Here I am indebted to that crazy radical Aristotle. I think Aristotle is right to say that people are political animals, that is animals that live in a polis. Individuals and their rights must be respected, but people also live in groups, in society. There are individual problems which individuals must deal with individually, but there are also social problems, and social problems require social solutions. I can go on, and I have at times, but I’ll leave it at that for now.
Well written, thought out and respectful post. It reflects well on you..To clarify the libertarian position, what we libertarians acknowledge and accept (for better or worse) is the imperfection of the human condition. We acknowledge that power corrupts and are reluctant to hand large quantities to the federal government that literally has our lives in it’s hands..We believe that millions of individuals are better equipped for helping the disadvantaged than a monolithic entity who has to support itself, acquire the means of confiscation of other people’s wealth and methodology of redistribution..Check out this column from economist Dr.Thomas Sowell for some food for thought on the war on poverty..Have a great rest of day!
