So, John, when you are going to hire a freezer repairman or buy a new freezer?

Don’t stop now, John. You’re on a roll. Tell the grandparents that your wife is not only a bad cook, but not as pretty as other women and not as good a mother as Grandma is.

So many people say snarky things about Elly but John is truly an ass and that is rarely mentioned. He constantly treats his wife as if she has no feeling and is worthless. I would have thrown him out with the bath water long ago.

Anyone know for sure if this kind of thing from John was in the original run of what we have seen to-date?

I am constantly amazed by his bad behavior since he was nothing like this from the point where I first started reading the strip through its end.

    Thanks,

It doesn’t seem to be about bad cooking, but about quantity. Probably if John ate like this all the time, he would be as big as a house. Elly is just looking out for his health, and they should both be proud of that.

If this is the way the comic strip is going to be, it is a good reason it is in ‘reruns’ because it would no longer be funny.I think that John is the biggest horse’s * that I have ever seen in a cartoon strip let alone sitcoms. He got just what he deserved when Elly divorced him as I hear happened later in the ‘strip’.

John is a total jerk. When my X used to tell me I didn’t make it like his mom, I would ask him if I LOOKED like his mom…….anyway, I found out a while back that his new wife doesn’t even cook as well as I did and NEVER makes anything like his mom did……haha!!!!!!

iammu: juice am Charlie? Learn to spell or stick with English (in which spelling is even harder). Je suis Ahmed (the downed policeman specifically murdered in the incident).

Most of the remarks here are guys pouncing on Elly as a bad cook, when John’s comment is clearly about the quantity of food. When the freezer breaks, you have everything thawing at once, so it has to be cooked and eaten. The result is a nightly meal the size of a Thanksgiving dinner.Like the meal Grandma made.

    Lynn’s Notes:

This is a true story. The freezer didn’t break down, but it did have to be moved and therefore defrosted. I pulled out an archive of forgotten leftovers, summer fruit and fishing acquisitions, dry pie crusts, soup stock, and more. Some of this was still recognizable, so a mess of reconstituted fodder graced our plates for a week or two. People actually ate what I served — and the freezer was then refilled with the leftovers from the leftovers. We recycle.

FYI for those who are commenting on freedom of speech:.“Je” means “I”“suis” means “am”.Therefore it is: Je suis Charlie..NOT “jesuis”, or “jus” those are abominable mistakes in French and mean completely different things to what you might want to convey…just sayin’…

On the other side of the fence, despite the fact that her parents had operated restaurants for most of their working life, my mother was a so-so cook, though competent with a cash register. Of the two dishes my father could prepare (the first being a hash made Saturday night consisting of all the leftovers in the refrigerator from the prior week, ground up in a food grinder and fried in bacon grease, and the second being sour-dough buckwheat pancakes served Sunday morning), only one of them was worth remembering. So for me, school cafeteria food and nearly ANYTHING prepared for me by someone else was better than the base line. Just sayin’ – Mom’s cooking is not always going to be very hard to beat.

My Mother’s Husband complained too much and Mom packed up his stuff and sent him to his Mother’s, (She was not a very good cook,) and went on strike for about 2 months. He never complained again!

All I’ve ever seen Elly make are caseroles that everyone hates. She’s a ‘lazy’ cook, not a good one.

Once again, the usual comments are made: “Elly gets bitchy”, “John puts his foot in his mouth”, “Michael is a pig”, “Elizabeth the spoiled brat”. Of course, the Connie-haters are the loudest.

Most of these examples are spankings for bad behavior and well deserved that is not violence that is discipline. I promise you if someone told me as a kid to take a time out to think about what I had done I would spend that time thinking of what to do next. My mom disciplined me by spanking me up to 12 when I was more able to get the lesson with the sore butt. That is discipline not violence. And as for John he can be a jerk and constantly humiliates Elly in from of the kids and friends and often richly deserves the cup to the head.

comicsssfan: I have done some online editing, but it would depend on subject and pay. I am better if I am sufficiently acquainted with the subject (broad range there) and the pay is worth the time involved. “Retired” has to do with occupation and income vs. tax due, not amount of spare time. I am open to offers.

James was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Canada does not have Marines. Although something did happen where I was where a mugger thought an old pot-bellied man was a tempting target. Yes, he had a big belly, and his hair grayed. However, he also fought in Vietnam and utilized some of his skills. The mugger is fortunate he only was hospitalized for broken ribs. Not sure if John is a veteran, but at any rate, it would behoove him not to say insulting remarks about Elly in front of her WW2 father.
