When I was forced to go to family dinners they had the same set up; the problem was that there came a time when they had more adults than seating at the adult table and I ended up sitting at the kids table anyway.
Here at the ILs, we have graduated seating. Once you hit 40, you can maybe be one of the 12 or so at the “high table”. Then there are 2 tables for those in their teens and 20s (and 30s, even some married), and 1 table of 10-15 for preteen kids. It’s necessary because nobody has a table for 40. One year, we even had a toddler table with 4-6 kids. I kind of like it but also like when everybody is together. We usually mingle more at dessert time.
I was a late arrival for my parents. In my father’s family, I was much younger than his sisters’ children. One of his nephews has a son only 2 years younger than I am. I was more of an age to sit his other nephew’s kids when they arrived. I was considered by them to be one of the kids. I was honored to sit at the “kid’s table” until they were old enough to be considered adults.

In my house, we all sat at the same table. We didn’t see any reason to have a kids table.
