It does make me wonder why all of those sports and muscle cars get sold every year. They mostly end up in traffic jams and even if they do find some open road, you can’t do 150 mph for very long without risking jail time or death.
There’s a reason why ads for new cars show them driving on really cool roads with no other cars within sight. The driving experience looks exhilarating. Until you take that same car to the grocery store….
Even a “car guy” like Payne (or me) recognizes that the real problem is too many cars being used for commuting, when mass transit is faster, cheaper, and far more practical.
A co-worker who lived in Portand, and loved his car, but not the monthly parking bill, gas bill, and hours spent commuting. He tried light rail, and found out his commute time was cut by over 50%, his costs cut by 90%, and his stress levels dropped by 90% as well. He wondered why he’d stayed stupid, and on the freeway, for so many years.
While visiting the Trolley Museum in Kennebunk ME last summer, one of the historians there told us that around the turn-of-the-century, up through the ’20’s, one could travel from Boston to Annapolis by trolley!(of course, you would be making a hundred or so switch-overs, but all stops were within short walking distance!)

Yeah, that way the government can further control your movement. Sounds like a plan!
