I really like the way the coach is depicted, physically and in his treatment of Bob. Of course, that may be because in Bob he sees a future football star. Not sure how to explain it. I just really like the first panel.
Some gym teachers call students by their last names. Often loudly. They’re living under the delusion that we all shall grow up to be jocks. -——————————————And I want to know: in what parts of the country is physical education called P.E., as it often is in comics? I never heard that in school. Never. We called it phys ed or gym. P.E. is foreign to me.
More or less always by my first name until I hit college. Took a while to get used to being called by my last name….
Coach at my HS was also a math teacher. He gave (and got) good respect. Head coach really didn’t seem to know that anybody under the top 1% of the jocks existed.
Reminded me of my Peewee league baseball days. The coach always wanted me to play for the other team. “Awful” didn’t even begin to cover my capabilities. Coach was a decent guy, even so.

In Southern Pines, NC (late 1960’s) it was called P.E. or just gym. Our P.E. instructor always called us by our last name.
