America used to declare war. Or at least ask congress for legal authorization. (Man: A date which will live in infamy.) Not anymore. Obama is pointing to old documents for old wars to justify his new attacks on ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Master ex-constitutional lawyer Obama's novel exploration of archival legal documents opens up awesome new possibilities. (Man 2: Nothing in this "emancipation proclamation" prevents us from invading Russia. Putin's "slaves" must be freed!) Any writing, no matter how ancient or irrelevant, can be used to justify anything. (Man 2: This hittie restaurant receipt clearly allows us to demand a refund... in the form of the nation of Syria! (Man 3: Congress?!? Who needs 'em?)

Possibly even “The Epic of Gilgamesh” could be looked to for justification. Apart from its general portrayal of insidious ancient intrigues and political violence (obviously still prevalent in that area of the world), it provides these lines that politicians might specifically use to build multinational support:.“If your heart is fearful throw away fear; if there is terror in it throw away terror. Take your axe in your hand and attack. He who leaves the fight unfinished is not at peace.”.Probably even the cave paintings of Lascaux contain relevant justification if we look hard enough.

Except Congress is on kind of a permanent vacation until after elections. I’m not sure they will even bother coming back then and they certainly won’t do much like declare war.

if congressional leaders had a backbone, they’d convene a special session to discuss whether to vote for war. If the president had a backbone, he’d call congress back to town for a special session. Of course, there would be resistance, but I imagine that us little people would make it known that resisting the need to do one’s job is unacceptable. Maybe.

Once again, we show the world how divided and fu’d we are, with a congress belligerent to the White House, refusing to cooperate, and looking only to upcoming elections to attatin total power.

Obama doesn’t have much choice. Congress is dead. They have done 1/3 of the work of the “do- nothing” congress. If they refuse to do the work we elected them to do and actually help run the country, the only choice Obama has is to try to do it on his own, or just let nothing get done at all.

Someone made a rude remark to you on one of these sites a few days ago. A similar remark was made to me about a year ago, and I felt bad about it for a while. .Each person has a style of writing or speaking certain to irritate somebody, but that doesn’t mean the person must stop writing. If that sounds pedantic as well, I’m old enough not to care too much. I for one appreciate your comments and hope you will continue to make them, and I see that you are.
