That is going to be one dead dog from all that chocolate.

The notion that dogs won’t eat something that’s bad for them is proved wrong with chocolate. Many dogs are also lactose intolerant, so perhaps all that Double Dutch Ice Cream will end up on the carpet, not being digested.

On the other hand, some dogs don’t have a serious reaction…perhaps a slight upset stomach or even nothing at all! A friend’s standard poodle once ate a 1-lb. box of chocolates off the kitchen counter. No ill effects.Another friend regularly saved a spoonful of chocolate ice cream for her 2 dogs from her nightly bowl of ice cream. They never had any reaction (maybe because they had built up a tolerance to it….I don’t know.).Naturally, it’s better to be safe than sorry. I, myself, am very careful that my dog doesn’t have any chocolate….who wants to take that risk?

The higher the cocoa content, the greater the risk, and the larger the amount consumed, the greater the risk. Dogs also have problems with garlic and onion, macadamia nuts (but not peanuts), grapes and raisins, and an assortment of other foods that people tolerate quite well. I’m with StelBel on this. Who wants to take a risk with a valuable member of the family?

Chocolate is indeed poisonous for dogs, but only in large amounts, or from a steady diet of it over a period of time. A little bit can usually slip through without causing great harm, so if your dag manages to eat some anyway, odds are it’ll pull through fine anyway, but as it can still cause some dogs to become at least partly sick, it’s still recommended to avoid feeding it to them where possible. Like already noted, if the dog can get at it, it will eat it itself.

My dog loved M&M Peanut candies. She would catch them in mid-air when we would toss them to her. We didn’t do it much because she would get terrible gas after eating them.

Is it a rerun? Rats. See, I’m running off to the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning (check it out, folks) and am in a bit of a hurry.

I’m glad everyone is nervous about dogs and chocolate. I am too. My stepdaughter once screamed in terror when my dog got a hold of a chocolate bar, but she was ok (the dog, not my stepdaughter….she needed counseling).

The truth is that this comic was created when Claremont was a pig. Yes, Claremont was once a pig, but I changed him to a dog. I really need to unload old T-Shirts that I have of “pig Claremont”.

Anyway, I never bothered changing the flavor of ice cream when updating this strip. Let’s forget about chocolate. It’s now strawberry. Mmmmm. Strawberry.
