Rex is actually coming close to describing a real-life situation known as “The Tragedy Of The Commons”, in which publicly-owned assets (like parks and waterways) all too often become used, abused, and damaged – sometimes irreparably – because no one person has “authority” or “ownership” over the item and so folks think that the care and upkeep is “someone else’s issue, not mine.”
Had an interesting argument with a friend over whether corporate ownership of properties like Star Wars is a good thing, in the long run. I was arguing that culture should pass into common ownership, letting anyone play at authoring Star Wars stories; he was arguing for the value of a single owner, even if that owner makes choices about Canon that fans don’t appreciate. This “Tragedy of the Commons” is an important objection to my argument, but I’d still like to believe that more good than bad would come of a Star Wars commons—on par with the Greek Mythos and the Arthurian Knights and the Grimm Tales commons that are already part of our cultural heritage.
