Self complacency was Charles strong suit. “Come ’ere!”, bellowed Celia. He stared at the line in the linoleum floor, following it to her toes. “Well?” He noticed the nail polish on her second toe was red. The rest were pink. “If you make me come for you, you’ll live to regret it.” He wondered if he was supposed to not live to regret it. He looked to the opposite counter for his tea cup. A thud of a falling heel. A fluttering sound. A whap against his forehead. He was inexplicably holding the morning paper. He could hear behind him the measured stomp as Celia went back to their bedroom to find something to wear. Charles loved the mornings, mostly because mornings meant tea and news. Bad men doing bad things that were so easily justifiable to themselves.

    Garbage comes easy.

Betty should try NaNoWriMo: 50,000 words of original fiction in 30 days. All you have to do is remember that you’re only aiming for a first draft, and all first drafts are junk. It’s the editing and re-writing that makes it worth reading.

This summer, City Hall hung strange pieces of paper on the trees that lined the block. Some were decorations, some were interesting facts about the city. But one was a story tree. Paper and pencil attached the instructions were simple. Start a story – provide one or two sentences and walk away. Let someone else pick up the tale. The paper had been there for almost a week and no words…… So I started a story. I don’t know if anyone added to my start, but on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I did my part….“Once upon a time in a city by the sea, far, far away lived three friends. A bear, an eagle and a wolf.”we didn’t have to be good. just start a story.
