I disagree; Europe was a powderkeg in 1914. Germany wanted colonies by any means necessary, France was determined to get the Alsace and Lorraine back, Tsar Nicholas was itching to wipe away the humiliation of the Russo-Japanese war. Britain was furious at Kaiser Wilhelm for daring to build a fleet to challenge the Royal Navy, and Austria Hungary was almost praying for an excuse to send its army into the Balkan states. If it hadn’t been the Archduke’s assassination, it would have been something else.

Going further back, had not the French gotten into a snit over a letter perpetrated by Bismark the Franco-Prussian War would not have happened, Germany might have remained related but non-united princedoms and it would have been Austria’s problem to work out with Serbia.Playing ‘What-if?’ with history can be an interesting pursuit.On a personal note, had the war not broken out when it did, my father and most of his family would have returned to the US so that he could grow up here instead of the Kaiser’s piece of Poland.
