Rob Wilco: Did you think that a bird book would tell you a bird's actual name? Like you would recognize the individual bird you were looking for and it would say "Larry, second tree to your left" under him? It's a guide to birds, Bucky, not a yearbook! Bucky Katt: What good...is a guide to birds... If it doesn't tell you who the bird is?! Satchel Pooch: He's got a point.

Actually, he does have a point. One does usually use the word “guide” to refer to someone or something that gives directions for how to find what you’re looking for.

Naming a bird is a serious matter,it’s not just one of your holiday games, and you may think I’m mad as a hatterwhen I tell you each bird has got three names
Cats, of course, have just two

My mother named all male cardinals “John,” and the females “Marsha,” after the Stan Freberg bit; I have carried on the tradition.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkfwmB8jeSU

Looking at that first pane made me think Rob had a head injury…I’m glad he’s just irritated.

In San Rafael, where one frequently sees guide-dogs-for-the-blind in training, I noticed a mockingbird which could imitate the “safe to cross” sound at the stoplight intersection. Yikes!
