There is a caterpillar there that lives on mulberry leaves and the cocoons they spin are, if I remember correctly, soaked and then unwound and spun into silk. (Can remember things I read as a child, just don’t ask me where I put my purse!)
I read when I was a kid a Chinese princess was drinking hot tea and the silkworm fell in and when she fished it out the silk came out and that’s how silk was discovered! If I can believe my third grade teacher!
