……..ummmmm…..nice, but to think a simple thing like throwing water on him coulda solved this problem long ago……shades of the Wicked Witch of the West…..

Throwing water is supposed to wake people up, even if they are very soundly sleeping, so I think that’s what’s happening. Tracy has been doing the equivalent of sleepwalking, walking around in a sort of trance.

But it needed to be done at exactly the right moment—if he’d fallen under the Belinda effect again, Dick would not have been woken even by a flood.

I think it was an act of desperation on Annie’s part. She probably wanted Tracy to “sit it out” and miss the Belinda broadcast. But when she saw he wasn’t going to cooperate, she threw the water in his face to wake him from his trance.

Either way, today’s strip is great! We have a major plot development and very touching emotion!

Leapin’ lizards, that was an easy and quick cure! But, I’ll take it, as they say. It’s good to have Tracy thinking for himself again and recognizing Annie. Now he and Annie can get down to the business of foiling Axel’s plot and maybe get a message out to their friends and allies….

In old Westerns, a sip of water was the only first aid the hero ever needed and water in the face was an instant cure for being knocked out.

Clocks: With all due respect or, should I say, disrespect – have we eliminated the likelihood of yet another Go Comics colorist bonehead – er – mistake? Kinda looks it to me….And when it comes to trolls, is it true trolls have more fun? Only Bud Grace knows for sure!.Check out Piranha Club! Bud’s going into his second week of this troll arc!

There is another minor detail about the clocks here..If this really is 1944, then there were no battery operated clocks. The first electric clocks were synchronous motor clocks, running off of 110-120 VAC, 60 Hz. (Of course, if you’re a Brit, that might have been 220 VAC, 50 Hz!).If there is no electricity in this clubhouse, then that clock has got to be a wind-up clock. Wind-up wall clocks tended to have fairly long pendulums hanging from them. I have a mantle clock from that era, but even it has a six inch long pendulum on the inside. Still, this clock is not nearly as thin as the clock in today’s strip..Yes, watches had tiny pendulums in them, but wind-up watches were also notoriously inaccurate and it was extremely difficult to regulate their speed..Bulova was the first to try to tackle that accuracy problem, using a tuning fork in the Accutron – an electric watch. Quartz crystals do the job today..Same with wall clocks of the fashion we see on the wall today: Battery operated, quartz crystal controlled.

Something is different with today’s strip. The way it is drawn. I like it, it just seems different, somehow.

Jay Maeder, author of Dick Tracy: The Official Biography (1990, now out of print) and writer for the last 10 years of Annie, passed away early this morning from cancer. Click for the New York Daily News obituary.Fans of Moon Maid probably wouldn’t agree with Maeder on the fate of Moon Maid:

“Bumping off Moon Maid was the single most reverential action any TRACY devotee could could have taken, and if Collins had never written another line, he would still be living in memory for having done the strip this affectionate good turn.”but the book is well worth having if you’re a fan.

Looks like the Luckys® have done Maeder a “reverential action”. (no laughy here)

Sadly, that could well be the case. Let’s hope Detective Sam cuts down on his “ever-present cigarette” before the same fate befalls him.

Not relevant to the strip, but speaking of water, a few hours ago, a water main on Sunset Blvd. in Westwood broke. It is just above U.C.L.A. and flooded just renovated Pauley Pavilion and a parking structure. Millions of gallons of H2O going to waste during a drought.

I think everyone is making too much over the clock. It wasn’t there yesterday. Tracy realized the time by looking at his watch.Consider it just included to keep the time in everyone’s minds (like the episode of M*A*S*H that had a real-time clock in the corner of the screen). And please, remember, the colors here are from GoComics. If it’s not colored in panel two, it’s most likely because the colorist simply missed it.(I speak from experience, having uncovered plenty of non-existent clues in the past.)

I’m 99.9% sure that the clock border in Panel 2 has no significance at all, that really is just water, and the poster didn’t disappear in panel 3. Some of you are making up clues that don’t exist.
