Perfect. And the TP. And the hand soap. But lest I get too far above myself, I must remember that we boys weren’t allowed to go into the living room when were children. No one was. So I sneer at my mother. But I can count on my left hand the number of times in 51 years that we have used our wedding china, crystal and silver. And do I give my best to those I love, or do I just give them the ordinary? Am I a “show” person or am I a “real” person? I’m afraid of the answer.

Well Mikie, I can honestly say we do use the wedding china. Once a year at out Christmas party. As for good towels, the ones in the guest room often can be found in the kitchen , they are interchangeable. Nobody has complained. And yes, my house is clean and clutter free, lest you all think we are slobs!

Oh, and I do have a collection of motel shampoo, etc in the guest room cabinet, in case a guest forgot theirs. No one has so far, I guess I should throw them out, most of them are at least 10 years old!

What would she do with towels from the Ritz-Carleton….frame them for the living room?

Mikie, I don’t think Paco meant you, either, when she talked about a rant….

I think she was making a joke, to no one in particular.

And honestly, I don’t believe bringing out the good china has anything to do with how much you value your friends.

It has more to do with how much you value certain possessions, and your comfort level with using them yourself.

Some guests, too, get nervous if they think they’re handling something precious…. they’d rather be “family.”

The people you feel closest to are often the ones for whom you don’t fret about a chipped cup…

It’s different from actually sharing something. If, like Burl or Joy, you buy butter, and Best Foods mayo, and steak, but hide them, and give your guests dollar store sandwich spread and hot dogs …then you might question yourself.

I didn’t think their bathroom would be big enough for the 2 of them.

We don’t have good china but I do have the silverware mom and dad got for their wedding. No I don’t use them. I do remember having to polish them for Sun. dinner while growing up, and also using better china plates. I guess that was the British part of us. Table clothes, cloth serviettes. a and washing, ironing and folding too.

The Penny’s don’t do things like that do they?

So what good is fine jewelry, dinnerware, clothes etc. if you don’t use and enjoy them ?? Many regret at the end of life period they didn’t enjoy the finer things in life.

I was raised in a rather highfaluting household; my grandmother was he original Hyacinth Bucket. I do use my good china and the sterling to please my husband, not strangers.

My godson’s mother, who was a real lady dog, once stopped by while we were have dinner. “Do you eat this way every day?”“Yes, of course.”“Well, I wouldn’t do that for Sam.”“Ah, yes,” sez I with a wicked smile, “but I’m sill married to my husband.”

We have gold edged china, crystal, sterling flatware, and fine china painted by my grandmother. We use it all. There is, of course, a slow attrition. Plates get chipped. Silver makes it accidentally into trash. Why should we and our guests not routinely eat off of the finest. I am an accomplished cook and make sure the food is the finest. So why not the setting, cloth napkins and all. And there’s something satisfyingly perverse in occasionally sitting in the living room, in front of the TV, eating off gold-trimmed china with antique sterling.

The Pennys are the reason motel chains use such crappy (pun intended) toilet paper. Guests steal the good stuff but who would steal toilet paper that feels like cardboard? Well, the Penny might.

I went through 2 sets of (similar to) my wedding china but now mostly just use some of the platters and bowls for large dinners. After my divorce I bought 2 complete place settings of Villeroy and Boch Intarsia (because Cite Restauant used the service plate and some others for expensive stuff like their caviar plate AND I like the motif of birds with musical instruments and fruit). I like to use those anytime I make a meal that is more than ordinary for two. I also have 12 Lynn Chase Parrot plates that I use for special family dinners. I have a big collection of glassware that I use every day- even my birds drank from good stemware.

Oh, and I also always use the best towels and bed linens that I have. Now well worn, but I’ll wait to see what fits best for new house before replacing any of those.
