Saleswoman: Skin care is all about the APPRECIATION of ONESELF! Years ago we said,"I'm worth it!" and spent $25 on a tiny vial of face creme. Now we say,"I'm worth it!" and spend $250 on a tiny vial of face creme! WE have appreciated in value by 1000%!! TA DA! "Appreciation of self"!! Cashier: The right product also fills in all those icky little lines in the logic!

Good for you for sighing, Cathy. We’ve gotten ourselves into this mess by saying “I’m worth it” for buying a $250 vial of creme, a $300 pair of jeans or a $150 pair of sunglasses or a house that we can’t afford and then the extra expense of upgrading it to the latest trend. It’s sad that we can’t say “I’m valuable” without buying more stuff. Go volunteer in a soup kitchen and you will be worth a lot more.

Or volunteer to spend time in an old-age home… Any company is welcome to them… and you’ll feel better for having brought a little change to their lives…

Also shop at Wal-Mart or Target like everyone else…you’ll save a chunk of change and get products every bit as good as the over-priced stuff at the mall without the high pressure saleswomen!

How about saying your worth it and NOT buy all that crap? It’s all full of bad chemicals anyway. I’m with lightenup and Tanya too. Find a better way to feel good about yourself. Volunteer. This strip isn’t very funny anymore.

Lightenup-you aren’t talking about me. May kids will tell you I’m so cheap I squeak. However, saying that, I will admit I refuse to shop at Walmart. Penny’s, Sears, and K-Mart get my business, and groceries from Aldi’s are great.

How many years is “years ago”? So if you do the math - to get 1000% from $100 to $1000 then you would have to start on or about 3/6/2009 - which is less than one year ago. Were it 10 years ago, the appreciation would be 25.9%. Yeah yeah, get a life. (Like Cathy’s) But the math in today’s strip is just wrong. Even if you take simple appreciation, 100 to 1000 is 900%.

Some folks who read this column are having a hard time recognizing satire: “trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.”
I see comments day after day indicating that many people don’t realize Guisewite feels the same way they do - she’s using satire in Cathy to make a point, while letting us laugh at human nature.
It also seems odd that anyone could seemingly have a real “grudge” against a cartoon character like Irving!

I don’t understand why we have to be so hateful towards anyone – Irving is a dope, but he isn’t hurting anyone but himself. Cathy has learned to accept (or often make fun of) his foibles. This latest arc is just too true about what we see in the millions of ads that have displaced the worthwhile material in our newspapers, stores, & entertainment of every kind. Somebody out there must be buying this garbage, but luckily most of the posters here seem to get the joke.
