I have been accused of thinking that the earth is a sentient being. That would be wrong. It’s more like a living organism, whose ecosystem is full of interdependencies between species and environments.
Like any living being, if someone tries to kill it, and it can’t leave the area, it will attempt to kill the killer. And when there is no more clean air and no more clean water, we will also have no more food that is safe to eat. Continue to try to kill the planet at your peril, because the earth will get the last laugh.
If we only brought back lead paint and asbestos, we could find more work for people.
My local paper notes hundreds of citations for just one coal mine in West Virginia as a result of just one recent inspection. I imagine that you protesting posters would be willing to overlook any health or safety issues for the miners. As long as they have jobs, nothing else matters, right?
According to an article I read a few weeks ago, the U.S. is exporting more coal to under-developed nations than ever before. Anyone else hear/read about this?
The question is: Just how much are you willing for your electric bill to go up each month to avoid destroying the planet?
I do know some coal miners. I don’t know one coal miner who would want his children to be coal miners. We will need less and less coal as we transition to clean energy, but that doesn’t mean we can close all of the mines this afternoon. They would have to be phased out. That would mean no new coal miners, but the actual unemployment of those currently working is not only unlikely, but pretty much beyond our capability.
Jeff, really, I don’t understand how making energy prices higher is going to cause thousands to die. Exxon-Mobil, Gulf, Shell, BP et al have been doing it for decades now.
But my rich friend, coal companies can evolve and get in on this “solar” trend and reap even LONGER TERM PROFITS with leasing solar equipment! After all the sun is giving away all that power, like a sucker, let’s all mooch off the teat of the mother sun.
Global catastrophe is extremely unlikely, even putting aside the fact that no global warming has been observed in the past 17 years and 9 months. Really, the fact that the EPA feels it must claim that “the sky is falling” only weakens its case.
What you miss my fiscally gifted friend is you buy the solar panels from China super cheap, pay some desperate yahoo to install them on the home of some left wing eco loon and charge him a wee bit less than his electric bill would be and just sit back and let the money flow in. Most of the work will be done by the sun, and the sun works FOR FREE!.With all that money you’ll make you can buy a Hummer for every day of the week! (at least the days you don’t want to drive your expensive exotic sports car).

“Pay me now, or pay me later”, means pay the coal companies, now AND later, or doctors and funeral directors if they again get their way in Congress.
