There is a book being released in September that I think Marigold might enjoy. Though she may not like having second billing in the title.

There are actually very few human books about unicorns. “The Last Unicorn”, “The Magic of Oz”, “Merry Go Round in Oz”, and “The Last Battle” are all I can think of, offhand, and only the first has a unicorn in the starring role. One more if you count the unicorn in “Through the Looking Glass”, but I’ve always seen that one as a bit of animated heraldry, and consequently not quite real. (But perhaps Marigold will correct me.)

I’m surprised no one has mentioned The Unicorn in the Garden By James Thurber

Is The Unicorn in the Garden at all related to The Elephant in the Room?

There’s also The Firebringer Trilogy which features unicorns as the main characters. I read one of the books in high school, and am considering downloading their Kindle counterparts soonish.

There’s also the books based on My Little Pony. They may not be classics, but they still have unicorns.

Piers Anthony’s Phaze trilogy has entire tribes of unicorns. Marigold might feel threatened – their horns can make music.

Mercedes Lackey’s Fairy Godmother series includes some rather mindless (but noble) unicorns.

But how many of these unicorns are actually characters? The one in The Unicorn in the Garden certainly isn’t; it’s just a bit of stage dressing, a prop, a MacGuffin.

I’m a little surprised how it could be forgotten — In The Once and Future King, the Orkney children, who would later grow up to be Knights at Arthur’s Table, make the effort to hunt a Uicorn, just like in the classic tapestry
