Must be some kind of Eastern thing – I’ve never been to any kind of an open house where they served sheet cakes or any other refreshments – usually the realtors insist the owners clean up the house to the point where it’s cleaner than a hospital room floor and vacate the premises…

‘Tiz the enda June in the northeastern states where HS graduations take place, and it’s usually done picnic style,open house and all, too many cakes and pies and most certainly with a 6-pak or a bottle hidden in the garage to help dull the adults ringing ears with a houseful of hyper-noisy teen-agers.. Night-Gaunt49: I can’t recall seeing sheet cake mentioned on the web ether, but that is what we call it within a hundred miles of Dallas. Does it have a different name around Houston or were you just noting the rarity of the term online?.Ewal Doh: The proper term is “back bacon”, the longissimus dorsii muscle cut cross-grain, to distinguish it from “side bacon” which is the intercostals cut with the grain and a bit diagonally. When anyone around here says “Canadian bacon”, I retort “That pig never saw Canada, it’s back bacon.” (Probably from the polluting factory farms in North Carolina, although other states are still competing with the same cruel techniques.)

bigpuma: The point is to help people avoid making Ewal Doh’s error. I never knew the proper term until I moved there, although later “The Great White North” skits gave the term some popularity “south of the line”. Education is its own excuse for being and everyone has some bit of knowledge that could be of help to someone else. One should never assume they know all that is necessary; you never know what you may need in the future.
