In the specific instance of the cartoon, if the guy holding the newspaper were to reach for his gun, he’d likely be shot before he could even touch it. Having a gun means nothing when you’re caught by surprise and already at gun point.

Those are the “edited” numbers in your “opinion”. Not that it makes any difference. There are so many other factors involved that a simplistic approach proves little.

No I never said that but the argument is that guns make a country less safe and the numbers do not say that Here look at it this way

Highest gun ownership vs murder rate.United States 101/100 vs 4.2/100,000Serbia 58.2 vs 1.2Yemen 54.8 vs 4.2Switzerland 45.7 vs 0.7Finland 45.3 vs 2.2The United States is first in gun ownership and 103 in murder rate among reporting countries.archimedes

These are not murder rates by gun these are overall murder rates.

Doubtless you are correct but I was responding to the comment by wmconnelly above who asked for data which I then provided. I have no problem with background checks—though not government list of gun owners, I agree that the mentally unstable should be precluded from owning firearms. I do not think limiting the firepower makes any sense as the amount of the firepower is not the issue.

If you want to see how polite a society can become when everyone has unlimited access to weapons, look at Iraq.

We all have to choose our poison. I personally have no desire to have a gun or a weapon of any kind, and I am not stupid enough to think that others will leave me alone solely because of my position. But I will state that most people killed with guns go stationary, and just plead for mercy. Me: see if you can hit a moving target. I bet you can’t. The first person who reaches for a weapon is the first person who runs out of ideas.

Do I think no one should have guns? Not in the slightest. But I have chosen my own course; we all have to choose for ourselves. When I find myself in a place where I see that there are weapons, I leave that area. Sorry, Mr./Ms. Gun Enthusiast: I don’t trust you enough to believe you are sane and rational, unless I know you well. Asking a stranger to trust you because you carry a loaded gun is the height of arrogance. Just one person’s opinion.

Compromise is not always a good thing.

    Example?

    How about.

“I wish to kill you”" I wish you would leave me alone"“Let’s compromise, I’ll just break both your legs”

The myth that you can draw a gun faster than someone can pull the trigger on one aimed at you, gets people killed on a regular basis. NRA doesn’t want you to know that roughly 90% of folks who “defend themselves” with a gun, against a person with a gun, end up getting shot themselves, fortunately, it isn’t always fatal.

In Afghanistan, everyone has had a gun for over a century, so much for “peaceful societies through gun ownership”.

Obviously luckovich and the lib trolls on here have no idea how the whole gun thing works. You allow law abiding citizens to carry guns and VOILA! criminals aren’t so likely to do what he’s showing in this toon. Perhaps you should look up cities like Kennesaw, GA where it’s the law to own a gun and see what the statistics say. I can tell you that they show crime rates went down. If you were a criminal, are you going to care what the laws are? No. Duh, you’d love gun control because it would mean that your targets were unarmed. If you were a criminal and the law stated people could carry just about anywhere, are you going to think twice about who you hold up? Um YEAH! Look at Chicago, NYC and other heavy lib gun control cities, they have some of the highest crime rates possible! For goodness sake, a Subway sandwich shop in Chicago just went bulletproof. Obviously common sense doesn’t live in the minds of most of the libs on here or the dimwit that wrote this toon SMH

Someone attempting a robbery or mugging is usually hopped up on adrenaline. He’d likely pull the trigger the second you make your move.

Cube: right, I have guns, so nobody from New York, or Ivory Coast, flew in to rob my house, part of that “defensive use” last year the NRA types cite. I love it even better for those who claim 4 million uses. Read the “Armed Citizen” sometime and look into those stories of shots fired blindly, or use that would get a COP arrested if he did the same thing with a gun, and you might see why true “gun nuts”, as apart from sane gun OWNERS make me nervous. And yes, I do have experience dealing with armed folks, in combat, and in law enforcement, and even when we both had guns in law enforcement, nobody got shot. You’re probably also aware than over 90% of retired police officers NEVER FIRED THEIR WEAPONS, other than on the range, as they never needed to on the street. A cool head, and situational awareness is a better weapon than a gun in the hands of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

Overtaxed: one more time, read the statistics, Miami, with loose gun laws, has a higher gun homicide rate than Chicago, or New York. Don’t ever let facts poke you in the eye, might spoil your aim.

oh yeah, what a much better scenario that every yahoo has a gun so they can have a shoot out in the street if someone tries to steal their wallet. Yet again, pubeicans put money before everything else (including logic and safety).
