Affirmative action was never intended to be permanent. It was a fix to help adjust for the bias that previously existed. If left in effect it creates a new bias. I worked in a large company through those years and struggled with unqualified people in the name of affirmative action. People should be accepted or hired based upon merit and performance. Anything else is unfair to somebody.

We’ll know that affirmative action is no longer needed when we stop getting stories like this: http://www.thewire.com/culture/2014/04/professors-are-less-likely-to-mentor-female-and-minority-students-especially-in-business-school/361047/

Why do people keep spreading these ridiculous stories about Obama? A few minutes on the web and you can find hundreds and hundreds of these things. There must be something about him that just drives some people crazy. I guess it’s because he’s a socialist. (joke)

It’s way past time to quit considering race and switch the affirmative actions over to income levels. Who needs the help, a smart kid whose family is a poverty level, or the Obama kids?

Where I work, Affirmative Action has a built in sunset clause. We have a list of Affirmative Action Categories. First, an applicant has to self-identify as a member of one of the categories. For example, an applicant can self-identify as a woman, which is one of the categories. Then, if our hiring unit is less than 40% women, and if a woman is judged to qualified for the position, then she has to be given preference. As it happens, our hiring unit is now more than 40% women, and consequently women do not get any preference. So a sunset clause is built in. And the rules clearly state that in no case is any applicant to be considered who is not considered qualified for the position. There was a period when most of our new hires were women. But of course there had been a long period when just about all of our new hires were men. Now it’s about half and half. The system has worked pretty well.
