I’m not getting this. Is the cartoonist saying more and more are going to be home schooled? Are the kids willingly going? Is home schooled preferrable to public schooling? What is the trigger here?

Threat? Providing education for the public should be viewed as a public utility that raises the value of community as a whole. Would you move to a community that didn’t provide running water, police service, roads, etc. And home schooling can’t be considered a long term, wide spread solution to general education problems. Are you ready to take half of the work force out of the economy to educate the children? Can’t leave the kids alone for the day to educate themselves can you.

It depends on the family and their community. I know a very large family who are active in a very large church; they’re turning out fine. And I have known a few families that practice home schooling; they’re not as bad as you may think, albeit, the family needs to be in a supportive community of some sort with plenty of kids.

I don’t know what you base that on; it seems like a bit of an exaggeration. If the community is part of mainstream USA, schooling being the one exception, I don’t have a problem.

The kids not being socialized has largely changed and been dis-proven. In the city I live in there are city teams and many sport/group situations not just church for the kids to meet and play. In fact there are whole groups of teams just for home schooler’s to interact with each other as they can do it at times others can’t. Why shouldn’t the money for a student follow him wherever he is meeting the official requirements of that education. I will say that most of the home schooled I have known tend to be more thoughtful and less violent but that is anecdotal at best. Still if that is what is being produced I for one would like a much larger percentage of our country to be home schooled. Oh and just a thought for most of history our history people were in VERY small groupings little more than family it isn’t a dysfunction it is how humans were built… just my 2 bits.
