First of all she needs to get that cauliflower out of her ear! Then after lighting the pilot light, she won’t have to worry about her dial tone because she will have been blown into the next county (where the area code remained the same)

She doesn’t need to. Only those out-of-town people calling the Pennys need the area code. And who would want to call the Pennys?

I wonder what they will do with 10-digit calling? Probably nothing since Patty will likely set up speed dial for everyone they call. “Now Mom, Pizza Delivery is on Speed Dial #1 and 911 is on #17, can you remember that?”

Yes, Heaven knows those pesky cell phones will use up an area code faster than Burl will use up a case of Ding-Dongs….

But if you change providers, they’ll give you all the area codes you want… FREE.

I saw it on TV…or something…..how long ago was that…seems like yesterday but…

Say, maybe that nice fellow from the long distance company told me…the one who always called at dinnertime and asked me to switch to MCI… Gee… I haven’t heard from him in a long time….

Mikie…. They already have 10-digit dialing… we all do …but as x_Tech pointed out, they still won’t need to use it.

Unless someplace they call is in a part of the county that keeps the present area code…. then they might need to dial it.

But Joy should be OK. She won’t be using the new one; she’ll be dialing the old one.

BTW .. over the years, I have programmed speed dials for several elderly people….

Yes, I know, Burl and Joy aren’t elderly…not from where I stand NOW….but back when I did it, I’m pretty sure the definition of “elderly” was younger….

    Anyway…. it’s usually a miserable failure.They just…don’t… get….it.

If they can’t set it up, they usually can’t use it, either. They dial the code without hitting the speed dial key, if their phone has one…they forget who is on what number, they start to dial the actual number, then halfway through, say "oops"and punch in the speed dial.

“I tried to call you you yesterday, but some man answered the phone…”

Oh… and true story….another rather elderly neighbor still paid $1 a month to “rent” her old dial phone, in the early 2000’s.

I told her it would be cheaper just to buy a new phone…but she refused, because “I don’t want a new phone number.”

    I couldn’t convince her it wouldn’t change.

We had no choice when we went to 2 area codes and 3 prefix #. Now I have a cell phone and I don’t care what area code I have as long as I can make and receive calls.

My mom In law paid rent on a phone for almost 50 years. When she died her son called the phone co. and asked them to come and get the phone. They didn’t want it, said she could keep it. I don’t know what part of dead they didn’t get. It was funny because her daughter jokingly said to bury it with her

Crabby.. We are all a little rattled in the head now and then, some just don’t want to admit it..

Burl ‘refuses’ to use a new area code, thinks changing carriers will let him keep his old one, huh? Guess he also thinks that as long as there are cheques in the chequebook there’s still money in his account.
