I loathed my first name and have always used my middle name. It was when my mother called me by that horrible moniker that I knew I was in trouble. Worse yet, she’d yell it out the back door to call me home to face whatever fresh Hell awaited me.
Even without trouble ours had practical use. Legally, I’m Gerald; my sister is Cheryl. Almost indistinguishable when heard from the top of the basement steps.

That’s sure what mine was for. If I got my nickname, all was well. If I got my formal first name, little bit of trouble. All 3 names BIG trouble.

The REAL reason for middle names is to replace the expletive that would ordinarily be used in such circumstances.
