I, too, have to question the definition of “working” as used by Mr. Luckovich.

While I agree they seem to have gotten the website going (though we still hear of problems). They don’t seem to have convinced the young people to voluntarily give up their hard earned income so that the seasoned citizens can get their healthcare at a lower cost. And if they don’t sign up soon, the Insurance companies will have to raise rates to pay for all those benefits that they are covering without enough premium income.

I think it’s a crime that the Democrats in Congress and President Odufus are trying to come up with another way to steal from young people to give to the elderly. How do they look themselves in the mirror?

The PPACA is working, in states where it is welcomed. My pre-existing condition is no longer factor. I have affordable health care insurance premiums from a FOR PROFIT insurance company. .In states that haven’t welcomed it, maybe not so much. Too bad, so sad, time to vote out some republicans and tea partiers.

@cjr53 – There is no such thing as a free lunch. The reason you are not being penalized for your pre-existing condition is because the insurance companies thought they would have many more young people paying premiums without demanding much in services. But those young people aren’t signing up because they aren’t the knuckleheads the Obamas thought they were. So next year Premiums will have to go up ALOT to cover all the people who flooded into the program to get subsidized healthcare.

I’m happy for you. I’m sure it was horrible to not get health insurance because of your condition. Can you show the same compassion for the youth that will eventually be forced into paying for your health care at gunpoint (IRS enforcement).

All of the benefits the government hands out to people came at the expense of someone else. Your benefits can only be provided because money was taken from someone else. So while you are receiving your treatments (whatever they may be) give some thought to the people who will be covering you.

If the government really wanted to help people it would enforce these simple laws:1) All Hospitals and Doctor’s offices will post a menu of services and fees.2) Everyone pays the amount on the menu and no more or less. (No kickbacks to insurance companies or employers).3) Government pays the same amount for each medicaid and medicare recipient so the government can’t force everyone else’s costs up to pay for the seasoned citizens and the indigents.4) Emergency rooms would not be required to treat non-emergency cases .

Then there would be fair pricing in the marketing and the medical industry wouldn’t spend 90% of it’s time redistributing costs from one group to another.

I never had any better health care before or after I lived in Canada. For rare and very expensive ailments, maybe US might be as good, but few people have those. But we have hundreds of thousands dying from lack or inadequate medical care. That is why Tommy Douglas was voted the greatest Canadian of all time – the voting was by Canadians.

If there are so many people for whom Obamacare means losing an excellent policy, or paying more, or having to leave a favorite doctor, how come whenever some enterprising journalist investigates the examples Kochs and the GOP trot out, they turn out to be fakes, most of which never even looked for a new policy on Obamacare? You’d think the GOP would come across better if they didn’t keep lying about it.Unless, of course, they can’t find anyone to meet their fables.

    @Cjr53 – I’ll take that as a No then.

Let’s parse your post a minute:1) Good for you – you pay property taxes. Those have NOTHING to do with the current conversation. Property taxes pay for local issues and I’m willing to bet that about 50% of that pays for your local school district.

    2) Health insurance is being invaded by the Federal Government; which doesn’t benefit at all from Local property taxes. This is an odd little tax because they call it a benefit – In theory, those forced to shoulder the burden of the elderly are being told they are receiving a benefit but we all know that isn’t true. The young will pay in much more then they get back.

    3) The regulations I am suggesting cut both ways. They force transparency in the market place but also hold the Federal Government accountable.

    3) I don’t disagree that the government should help people. I think where you and I disagree is to what extent. I’m all for the government providing security and infrastructure. Where I fall off the wagon is when the government chooses to take money from one group to hand to another; Read in that: Welfare, Social Security, SSDI, HUD, Farm Subsidies, R&D tax credits, etc. etc. The government shouldn’t be in the business of using mandatory taxes to prop up another group. If they want to create a charitable arm and encourage people to give – That I can support but anything beyond that is looting and enslavement.

I am not arguing against police, teachers, military, or any other public workers that are providing a service. But I am arguing against the giving of money to one group because they have developed a political benefactor: Poor, Elderly, Disabled, Unwed mothers, whatever.

By the way – I didn’t like the wars either so don’t think I’m one of those who wants the money to go to the military industrial complex.

    OBAMACARE has:

Kept my 23 year old grandaughter from having to buy insurance, which raised her salary, because her company isn’t paying for insurance and therefore put it into her salary instead. When she reaches the age to be excluded from her families policy, she will have choices as to what she wants to do to cover her policy. And, by the way, she’s using the extra money to pay for college courses. And, it has closed the donut hole on my medicare coverage somewhat, and is slated to do more in that regard in future years. And, my diabetic Aunt is now able to get insurance without having to pay more than the average person. She has been unable to find a job before this, because the insurance costs to a potential employer were enough to make other candidates more attractive. Now, she is working at a job that pays her bills. And, my brother, whose wife has chronic respiratory problems, is now retired from the job that he was only keeping so that he had insurance in case she got really bad. Since he now has Obamacare, he doesn’t need the job. And, some woman who I don’t know is now working at the job that my brother didn’t need anymore.

I hear on Fox news that many people are suffering from Obamacare. It comes down to do I want to believe them or my own eyes. I see zero people who have been negatively affected by Obamacare. The overwhelming evidence that I see is that five people I know have been effected by Obamacare, and I don’t think any of those people exactly feel like Obamacare victims.

@Dr. Canuck’s little Sister – She was quoting me. It isn’t people taking care of each other. It is the tyrrany of the weak (using majority rule) to TAKE from those who won’t give them as much as they want voluntarily. It is theft and slavery.

It is not right for the government to hold a gun to the heads of producers and say. Give us money which we will redistribute to those that have a political patron in Washington. It doesn’t matter that those people spit on the things I value like: Self reliance, hard work, saving for a rainy day, living within your means.

If the poor and the needy were cared for by charities then every contributer would be making sure the money was being used appropriately. But socialists don’t want us looking to hard at the recipients of all that government largess. They want us to just assume that it is being used in the best possible manner. All the while – We who are contributing to that largess can see it being squandered and spent on the worst sort of societal refuse.

@DrCanuck and Anthony – I do believe in being a citizen and contributing back to society. Both of you pursue the Utopia that was discussed by Plato and Karl Marx. And it would work splendidly if people could be convinced to set aside their personal wants and needs for the good of the collective. Unfortunately – It has never worked that way and eventually the state is forced to resort to violence against the capable to get them to continue to produce.

Look at the productivity of Socialst States vs. Capitalistic States. And I’m claiming China to be Capitalist because they are actually more Capitalistic then the US right now.

People work best when they are allowed to pursue their goals with limited fetters and then allowed to keep the fruit of their labors.

Do we need taxes? Sure. We need to pay taxes to support: A military, infrastructure, and domestic protection from criminals. We do not need the Federal Government taking money from one group to hand to another though. That is Slavery and Theft.

If you have read my posts – I am not just asking that we do away with Welfare; I was the first to say the bank bailouts were wrong. I will be the first to decry farm subsidies and corporate welfare as well.

You two are living in a dream world where you imagine that we can all live happily together as long as that other guy (who makes a lot more) would just recognize that it isn’t fair and that he should giver up most of it to the collective.

@Anthony – I agree that REAL Socialists believe in State Ownership. But many who claim to be Socialists are actually Collectivists. They believe in Socializing the results of labor and risk while privatizing the labor and risk itself.

It is not an unreasonable “dream” to expect the lazy and the stupid to learn to live within THEIR means and not the means of everyone else.

For Socialists to get the Society of which they dream – They have to FORCE the productive to continue to produce even though they know they will have the fruits of their labor taken from them.

For Capitalists like me to get the Society of which they dream – They have to FORCE the government to recognize that it is not OK to play Robin Hood in a Free Society. I think I have a much better chance of achieving my dream then the Socialists have.

Just ask “working for who”? In ML’s example, it IS working – for millions of poor/sick Americans. Same for GOP’s assertion “TrickleDown- working?” It IS working- for the 1%. Molly Ivins was right- corporate welfare has cost us much more than social welfare.
