If the earth stops rotating at some point in the future, why would that be the end of life? As long as it remains in orbit around the sun, it would be habitable, with some adjustment. The new “day” would be 365 days long, but it would get awfully cold at “night”.
Thank you for an eloquent, insightful, and moving post. I will act on it and write letters to my representatives in state and federal government, reminding them of their responsibility to represent people’s needs over those of business. Again, sincere thanks.
The moon is being accelerated by the earth’s rotation. Eventually the month and the day will equal about forty days. Then the process reverses, the sun slows the rotation, the moon gets closer and the day gets shorter again. The process ends with the moon crashing into the earth, but that’s many moons from now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_acceleration

We REALLY need to start working on that and “Global Warming” so the Earth can last 51 million more years….Lol.

That’s okay, because by then the sun will become a red giant and fry the planet so the longer day won’t get noticed…

Actually Adrian I’m an optimist. I figure when the Martians come we’ll make great pets!

In your opening, you said, “That would make the planet inhabitable.” Did you mean “uninhabitable”?

The cartoon is a case for unions. And for technology to free us into less employment.
