The other day I mentioned the phrase “I’d rather fight than switch” to my kids, ages 28 and 24. They’d never heard of it. When I told them it was from a cigarette commercial — on TV — they couldn’t believe it.
Or the Lucky Strike package with the catchy acronym “L.S.M.F.T.” meaning “Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco” and the company also sold “Lucky Strike Green”, but it was not meant to be about a responsible environment.

I’ve listened to just about every Jack Benny radio show that still exists, all the way back to 1932. (They made references to President Hoover!) For a good portion of its run, the show was sponsored by Lucky Strike. That’s where we got the recording of a tobacco auctioneer selling the tobacco to Lucky Strike. And, during the war, advertisements sometimes encouraged families to send extra cartons to their fighting men overseas.
