Alix: Well, here goes...another BORING day in my BORING life...
Val: When you grow up, you can travel to faraway places like Gramma...
Val: Which will be before I know it.
Alix: Which is gonna take forever.
There is another explanation. Alice is now… what? Ten? For her, waiting untils she’s grown up will take a full 8 years – almost another lifetime-up-to-now. For Val, it’ll take only 8 years – a fifth of her lifetime.
@NotSoAstute, I replied to your comment yesterday on yesterday’s strip. I really am enjoying these South African strips and I am writing from South Africa. It’s great to share my beautiful country with the rest of the world even though we do have our problems.
Alix, Alix, Alix. You’re a bright girl, find some adventure right in your own neighbirhood. Leave home a little early and find a new way to get to school. Go through a different street to get to your bus stop, walk on the other side of the tracks. You never know what you can find.
I’m grown. I’ve been to a few places, but have not traveled as much or as far I would have liked. They need a system where you can step off an airplane, have a job and a place to live until you save up enough for the next airline ticket, and be off again. It would be an open invitation for poor immigrants I know, but still. I hate the fact that I can’t just pick up and restart somewhere else without $10K in my pocket.
It’s important to do some travelling and have some adventures right out of high school before family and/or career tie you down. My nephew managed to cross North America, Central America, Europe and Asia off his “list”. When he was travelling South America, he met a nice girl and got married. It’s kinda hard to hitchhike around the world with a baby in tow, so Africa and Australia will have to wait!
Mom should alert the teacher to Grandma’s travels and the kid’s boredom and suggest that teacher offer some study assignments about S. Africa so the kid can text her grandmother for some facts. Figuring out what questions to ask should be fun for both the kid and the rest of the class.

It would be interesting if Evie invited Alix to spend a week with her in South Africa.

One saying is that the days are long, but the years are short.

Personally, I identify with that last panel. Time flies now that I’m an adult, but as a kid time took forever, it seemed, lol

Alix mumbles that it going to take Forever for her to get old enough for travel on her own…yep, until Jan decides to “age” her which I doubt… ;)

“NO. NO. mom’s wrong and (Alix) is correct.”
Studies have shown that time really does crawl for children; as we age, time seems to go faster and faster, which it does… ;)

Alix, it will be forever because you will never get any older, ever.
